Barrenjoey - Palm Beach in midwinter

Drove up to Palm Beach today, which started off as a sunny Sunday but soon clouded over. Walked up the beach and over the dunes to the Barrenjoey lighthouse track. Was shooting medium format with my Rolleicord Vb, but until those B&W photos are developed, here's a few pics with my digital Ricoh Caplio GX100 ...

Nielsen Park, Vaucluse

Goodbye, 35mm print film, it was nice knowing you ...

Nielsen Park, Vaucluse, originally uploaded by jiulong.

Last weekend I drove down to Nielsen Park (does anyone call it Shark Beach?) very early (well for me) in the morning - ie about 9am. Had a nice brekky at the kiosk and took my Contax IIa out for a wander. Used the Biogon 21mm lens and the 50mm Sonnar. I thought I'd captured some nice images, but the Sydney 35mm colour print photo developing crisis is really taking effect. There is no longer any photo lab in Sydney that I know of that can develop 35mm colour prints to anything approaching a 'normal' standard. I'm not expecting professional results, but the prints I'm geting back look like they've been taken on a disposable camera and developed by someone on acid. The colours are terrible - skies are cyan instead of blue, grass is lime instead of green. I use Leica lenses that have a subtle, low contrast look that appeals to me. I used to be able to see this even when I got my prints done in the One Hour Photo Lab at the station. Now even the expensive 'professional' labs produce prints that look shoddy. So what can I do? Well, in this case I have tried to salvage the images by scanning the negatives and then reversing the images in Photoshop. As you can see, it doesn't work very well. The images derived from my Epson V500 look washed out and too blue/green. I've tried to modify the colour curves (more red, less blue) but I just can't get the colours right, and i can't be bothered faffing with 36 images in this way. Oh for the days when I just picked up my nice prints and scanned them in with perhaps just a touch of lightening up to bring out the details in the shadows.
I no longer get any joy from seeing my photo prints. Photography used to be fun, and i loved seeing the different results that I would get from the Contax Sonnar lens (cool, sharp and contrasty) compared to the Leica Elmar (more 'texture', depth and more subtle colours).
Alas, the only thing now is to develop my own B&W photos (Fuji Acros 100 seems to be the one that works best for me), or to use colour slide film (Kodak Elite Chrome). Pity I will not get to do those rolls of Kodak Ektar justice.
