Burning Palms Beach, Royal National Park
Had a nice walk to Burning Palms beach south of Sydney this weekend. Lovely weather, great solitude and some nice apple pie at the cafe at the start of the walk too. Slides are being developed ...

A photo trip to Narrabeen ...
Had a very nice winter walk in the sun this weekend down from North Narrabeen to Collaroy beach on Sydney's northern beaches. It's been a hectic week at work, with me covering for people at sick, so I was pretty stressed out by Friday. How nice it was, then, to get away from it all for half a day and feel the sand squishing between my toes and to hear nothing but the crash of the surf.
It's a strange beach - one of the longest on the northern beaches and maybe just the tide was in, but it was very short and steep for much of its length. It was actually quite hard to walk because the sand was very mushy, and it wasn't safe to walk too near the crashing, sucking waves ... I also had to dodge a few jellyfish washed up in the surf.
It was worth the effort because apart from a few optimistic surfies I had the beach to myself. Walked down to Collaroy, intending to go all the way to Long Reef, but was knackered by the time I got to the nice deck cafe at Collaroy, and stopped off there for a very welcome BLT and flat white. What a great location for a cafe - I'm surprised it isn't booked out for weeks!
Pottered about at the sea pool trying to take arty pictures of the shadows with my Contax IIa and the Nikon 35Ti. I love the sun reflections/patterns in the still water, and tried to capture some of that with Ektachrome slide film wit the Contax (watch this space) and with some B&W film with the Nikon.
I had the Rolleicord with me too, but two cameras is already more than enough - and I was having fun using the Contax again after such a long break. Beautiful camera ...
And so then it was backtracking to Narrabeen, feeling like I was catching the sun. Here are the results of the print snaps I took ... developed at Woolworths, just about the only cheap ($7 a roll) film developing place left in central Sydney.
Narrabeen Lagoon
This snap is by the Nikon 35Ti - compare it to the one below taken with the Contax. Interesting differences in contrast, saturation and texture ...
Manly ferry me with Rolleicord
Nikon 35Ti
The weak point of the Nikon 35Ti seems to be in bright contrasty sunlight situations like this. Or maybe it's just because I'm using high speed (400) film. The cheap and cheerful Voigtlander Vito B performs much better in these conditions - I should use it more often.

These next few pics are me mucking about with the Rolleiflex with some Ektachrome E100g slide film in it. The quality of that film in 120 is so good that it can make ordinary objects like this look amazing.

Manly me by Rolleicord medium format
I'm having trouble getting the focus right on self portraits with the Rolleicord ... as you can see. Even when I pre-focus on the place I'm resting the camera and then swap ... they come out like this.
Kodachrome Drighlington and Leica R7 with 28mm Elmarit-R
I am really amazed by the quality of the pictures i got back from the roll of Kodachrome I bought in Boots in Leeds (12 quid including pre-paid developing). It's a crime/shame that Kodak are discontinuing is film.
[Not all the pics below are Kodachrome - some are the least worst of the horrible Fuji Sensia ones, others may be from the equally crappy magenta-tinted Agfa CT slide film]

Spurn Point, Yorkshire, UK
I drove over the M62 very early one morning in June and after bypassing Hull arrived at Spurn Point peninsula at about 8am ... a very strange place.

Circular Quay by Rolleicord Vb
I am in love again. I am in love with medium format - my Rolleicord camera in particlar. I am in love with Fuji Neopan B&W film. But most of all I am in love with the light that suffuses Sydney in winter. I walked out today with my camera intending to take a few random pictures to use up the 'useless' B&W film I had put in it. I wanted to 'crack on' to the Ektachrome. But when I developed the film this afternoon (in LC29 1+19 for 4.5 minutes) it was a revelation. It's just like those wonderful Hedda Morrison pictures I used to see of Beijing. Or the Harold Cazneaux pictures of Sydney. I love B&W medium format. Forget the Leicas and Contaxes - Rolleicord here we come.
