Balmoral beach
On a quiet Wednesday lunchtime. It's usually busy at the weekend, especially in summer.
Bathers Pavilion, Balmoral
This is where we went for lunch yesterday (Wed 22 June). One of Sydney's most well known eating places. On the north shore.
Balmoral dining
This is inside the famous dining room of the Bather's Pavilion. I'd never go there as it is way too pricey. But thanks to the Meat and Livestock Marketing Board we had a good feed. Had to listen to their nutritionists spiel about high protein diets, though.
Balmoral palm shadows
At the the end of the shortest day of the year, as the sun was getting low in the sky at 3-is and we returned after a long lunch, stuffed.

Chinese Gardens, Darling Harbour

On Sunday I took the boys down to Darling Harbour in the winter sun, and popped into the Chinese gardens there. Not very authentic because they are too clean, tranquil and sunny! A real Chinese garden would be dirty, hidden under industrial smog and full of tour groups following a leader with a megaphone and all wearing identiacl baseball caps. The ponds would be full of discarded coke cans and cigarette butts ... oh, I won"t go on. Just enjoy ..
Chinese gardens, Darling Harbour
Paul is a natural climber ...
Will and does climb up anything, especially trees, furniture, dad. So I thought I would let him try the real thing at Darling Harboour. He loved it, couldn't get him off the thing ...
On the sunny side of the house
Andrew and Paul's bedroom. Where they build their "bunkers" while playing war.
Eat your dinner, Andrew
Rice again? Why do we have rice every day???? [Because your mum is Chinese, that's why].
Testing my new Leica IIIa Elmar 35mm lens ...
Another Paul shot, this time with my new "wide angle" lens, all the way from sunny Germany. It was made in 1937 or somthing, and looks to be still performing as well as the camera. Until now I've been using a 50mm Summar on this camera, which is nice but a bit soft.
The hospital and the graveyard
This is Gore Hill cemetery, right next door to the North Shore Hospital. Is it for their mistakes? It's actually a national monument or something. An untidy place, but not that morbid, I thought.

Observatory Park in winter
Taken with a Leica Summar 50mm lens, stopped down, Fujic 400ASA print film.
Fight my way onto a Cityrail train to St Leonards ...
{Taken with my new Leica Elmar 3.5/35mm lens from 1937!)

Observatory Park
Been here before haven't we? It looks nice in autumn/winter too. It's just up from the Rock and near to the entrance for the walkway over the Harbour Bridge.
Yizhe's sixth birthday party
On Sunday we went over to Homebush to the Aquatic Centre [Olympic Pool] for a birthday party. Paul's classmate Yizhe was six and his mum arrnaged a pool party for all the boys. Better idea than going to McDonald's ... they got to do lots of games and races and get looked after by swimming instructors for two hours. And then there was cake ...

A diplomat defects: Chen Yonglin

A diplomat defects: Chen Yonglin

I came across this demo by chance as I walked down George St on Saturday afternoon. In Martin Place there were a lot of Falun Gong demonstrators and some other pro-democracy supporters. I couldn't believe it when they said a Chinese diplomat was about to announce he was claiming political asylum in Australia. Sure enough, there was Chen Yongling, whose actions have now become famous across the world.

As you can see here, the demo/meeting was actually not very well attended - perhaps a hundred people in all, many of whom were participants and media rather than observers.

He's now back in hiding after the Austrlaian government turned down his request for political asylum. Cowards.
TV cameras at Channel 7
Their studio is right in the middle of Martin Place, from where they broadcast their breakfast show and you can peep in the windows. Never watch it, it's rubbish.
Floaty things at Garden Island.
Saw these interesting shapes at Garden island - flotas or fenders? Don't ask me, I never made it past midshipman in the weekend navy.

Paul's birthday banquet
It was his sixth birthday so we had a few people round for an evening meal. This is what they made.
Saying goodbye to Ronda
